What are the operating principles of a piston pump?

A piston pump is essentially a volumetric pump that doesn't generate direct pressure but manages liquid flow. Its operation relies on the reciprocating motion of one or more pistons that move a defined quantity of liquid from an inlet to an outlet connection. Pressure is generated as a consequence of liquid passing through a specific-sized orifice, the nozzle, which determines pressure based on flow rate. Pump selection must consider pressure and flow specifications above actual system requirements to avoid excessive stress.
